The US Air Force on Tues. confirmed for the 1st time that it is flying a stealth unmanned aircraft called the “Beast of Kandahar,” a drone spotted in footage and wrapped in privacy. The RQ-170 Sentinel is being developed by Lockheed Martin and is designed “to provide reconnaissance and surveillance support to forward employed combat forces,” the air force recounted in a short statement. The “RQ” prefix for the plane indicates a weaponless drone, not like the “MQ” designation used for Predator and Reaperaircraft provided with missiles and precision-guided bombs. Aviation experts dubbed the drone the “Beast of Kandahar” after footage appeared early on in the year showing the confusingaircraft in southern Afghanistan in 2007. The image advised a drone with a radar-evading stealth-like design, resembling a smaller version of a B-2 bomber. A blog in the French paper Liberation revealed another photograph this week, feeding supposition among aviation watchers about the classified drone.
